Range: Mexico, Belize, Honduras
Reproduction: Swordtails are a livebearer, the females giving birth to fully formed fry. Males will mate with several females, from one mating females give birth to multiple batches of fry. Gestation period is around 28 days at 26-27°C, longer at cooler temperatures. Easily bred.
Feeding: Omnivorous. Eats most aquarium foods, will also pick at green algae.
Additional Comments: Very popular aquarium fish, active and colourful. Males grow to about 7-8cm, and start to show their distinctive 'sword' at about 5cm. Females grow to 9-12cm. Swordtails have been selectively bred into many colours and various fin shapes.
