Range: Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe

Reproduction: Mouthbrooder: after spawning, the females incubate the eggs in their mouth until the fry are free-swimming. Males will mate with multiple females. The fry are easily raised with first foods such as baby brine shrimp.

Feeding: Carnivorous. Dry foods and frozen foods.

Additional Comments: Needs several hiding places and prefers fine sand as substrate. One of the most popular Malawi cichlids, with a relatively peaceful nature. In nature it follows large sandsifters such as Fossorochromis, waiting to punce on food items unearthed by the larger Cichlids.
