Range: Lake Malawi: throughout the lake

Reproduction: Mouthbrooder: after spawning, the females incubate the eggs in their mouth until the fry are free-swimming. Males will mate with multiple females. The fry are easily raised with first foods such as baby brine shrimp.

Feeding: Omnivorous, sifts substrate for food particles. Dry and frozen foods.

Additional Comments: Large-growing sand-sifter, prefers a very large aquarium and find sand for substrate. Will sometimes bury itself if alarmed. Mature males make magnificent display specimens with their highly ornate markings.
