Range: South America: Rio Negro region
Reproduction: Eggs are laid on a firm surface (eg plant leaf), the eggs (and hatched fry) are cared for mostly by the female. Rarely bred succesfully, requires soft acid water for spawning.
Feeding: Omnivorous. Prefers small live or frozen foods.
Additional Comments: Adult male Checkerboards are very attractive with their long finnage and green spangles. Rarely bred, most aquarium stock is wild-caught from South America. An excellent fish for planted tanks containing small species. Will eat small fish if given the opportunity.
