Range: China
Reproduction: Breeds in Spring as water temperatures start to increase. Scatters adhesive eggs amongst plants, the adults will prey on the eggs and fry if they find them. First foods for the fry include freshwater plankton (in ponds), or fry foods such as Vinegar Eels and Fry powder food (if raising in tanks).
Feeding: Omnivorous. Eats all normal foods, including aquatic plants.
Additional Comments: The Shubunkin is one of the more popular Goldfish varieties, ideal for unheated tanks and also for outdoor garden ponds. Like the Comet, it is hardy and easy to care for. The colouration of each fish can vary significantly, some fish are predominantly blue, some mostly red, etc. Shubunkins first appeared in Japan at the end ot the nineteenth century.
