Range: Murray-Darling system and Eastern Australia.
Reproduction: Eggs laid on a firm surface and guarded by male until they hatch.
Feeding: Carnivore, prefers small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia.
Additional Comments: Useful for mosquito control in garden ponds, and as a food fish for larger species in farm dams. Males develop larger more colourful fins. There are several closely related species all commonly known as Carp Gudgeons.
