Range: Northern Australia and southern New Guinea
Reproduction: Egg scatterer, lays large eggs on plants, rarely breeds in aquaria.
Feeding: Carnivore, prefers bulky live or frozen foods. Relishes live prey.
Additional Comments: Highly adapted fish predator, with an impressive set of teeth! Occurs in both fresh and brackish water. Occasionally bred in aquaria, becomes mature at around 35-40cm (can grow to 80cm in nature, but usually stays much smaller in aquaria). The fry require live food such as adult brine shrimp - initially they will only prey on live food which is moving in mid water.
