Range: South-eastern Australia
Reproduction: Scatters eggs amongst aquatic plants, spawns in spring.
Feeding: Carnivore, prefers small live or frozen foods.
Additional Comments: Excellent fish for mosquito control in frog ponds in cool climates (eg heavily shaded ponds, locations south of dividing range). Becomes very colourful during breeding season (late winter and spring).
