Range: South America:Guyana, Brazil
Reproduction: Lays eggs on a firm surface (plants, slate etc). The eggs and fry are cared for by both parents. Difficult to breed.
Feeding: Carnivorous. Live and frozen foods, also dry foods.
Additional Comments: Orinoco Altums are one of the more demanding freshwater fish species, capable of frustrating even the most experienced of fish-keepers. Prefers warm, very acidic water and excellent water quality. Altums become very deep bodied, they should preferably be kept in a tank at least 60cm deep. Provide some hiding places such as tall plants or driftwood. Very difficult to breed, most stock is supplied wild caught from South America.
